Os temas das canções, cantadas por grupos de homens ou mulheres, são normalmente tristes, dando a conhecer o que vai na alma: a melancolia, as saudades, o amor, as vontades e as recordações da terra onde se nasceu. Mas há também canções irónicas e humorísticas.
