   TRAIL

OF

MOURÃO

FOR THE LIVING HERITAGE OF MOURÃO

The village of Mourão is a real treasure on the shores of
Lake Alqueva.

Marked by its proximity to the River Guadiana, today it is an
idyllic setting with waters as far as the eye can see, the
roads immersed in the Alentejo mantle that surrounds
them.

The hills and the old walls are now part of a naturally
preserved setting and its castle reminds us of ancient
times when it was necessary to defend the borders with
Spain.

Start next to the Mourão Tourist Office in Largo de São Bento and go up Estrada da Barca, turning at the
top onto Rua Frei António das Chagas until you reach the Castle, which you should visit. Leave the castle
and head north around the outer walls, then turn right along the old moat. Follow a path between the
walls towards the Chapel of São Sebastião. Go round the hermitage and descend a little, then reverse
direction at a wide bend to the left, taking the path between the walls, parallel to the water line. Continue until you reach the old tarmac road and turn left along the old Estrada da Barca until you find another perpendicular path to turn right. Go down between the walls on this path, which ahead has a dirt track. Keep going straight ahead, cross another old tarmac road and continue until you reach the end of a small peninsula. Here the paths to follow are always dependent on the water level. After reaching the end of the peninsula, turn left, following the line of the shore until you reach the old road again, next to a house.Keep going straight ahead, cross another old tarmac road and continue until you reach the end of a small peninsula.
